Our grappling with the large issues is confused with inappropriate thinking. (Or, at least, inappropriate according to certain criteria, particularly those of environmental sustainability.) Here are three examples. In the first example, I point out that were we now to design the layout of irrigation in Australia from first (environmental) principles, we would probably not irrigate much in the Murray Darling Basin, but concentrate on shorter rivers that naturally drain and hence remove salt to the sea. Adelaide, of course, is not well positioned for water supply!
